Welcome to STARTTS

The NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors provides a holistic range of professional services to facilitate the healing process for refugees who have been exposed to torture and trauma. The service also provides early health assessment and intervention services to newly arrived people from refugee like backgrounds.

STARTTS

  • recognises the political and human rights context of the traumatic experiences undergone, and the complex interaction between the effects of these traumatic experiences and subsequent stresses associated with the migration and settlement processes;

  • places particular emphasis on a client centred approach that recognises and addresses the importance of language, cultural, religious and socio-political issues to overcome access barriers and increase the effectiveness of clinical and community development interventions;

  • services are broad, and include assessment, counselling, psychiatric assessment and interventions, family therapy, group interventions, support groups, youth programs, child counselling, and various strategies to increase the capacity of support networks and refugee communities to sustain its members;

  • consults regularly with a diverse range of refugee communities to ensure specific and relevant service provision to the many different cultures which comprise our client group;

  • employs professional staff with extensive training in counselling and therapy, from a large range of cultural backgrounds;

  • assists individuals and other relevant organisations to provide appropriate effective and culturally sensitive services to refugee clients and communitie
